Have you ever been frustrated trying to look into your closet for your favorite shirt or trouser and you just cannot find it? You begin digging deep into the racks to see if it might be stuck somewhere between the larger clothes. All this time, clothes are falling off and creating a mess on the floor near the closet. If this describes you hassle almost every morning, it’s time for a better change.

I used to struggle every morning trying to look for an outfit to wear to work, and that hassle used to disrupts my morning. So can we talk about how to organize your clothes closet by type and color?

I am naturally messy and very busy, but I learned a simple trick of closet organization which I want to share with you. If I can do it, believe me, you too can. Here are the instruction on how to organize your clothes closet by type and color;

Step One

The first thing is to clear your closet.
Start by pulling one cloth at a time and sort them in 7 categories;

– Long-sleeved shirts

– Short sleeved shirts

– Sweatshirts

– Tank tops

– Pants

– Jackets

– Work clothes; shirts and pants

Now gather all the empty hangers and pick up all the items that have fallen on the floor. Sort them out and hang them as well. If you have matching hangers, this works best. You don’t need to rush to the store to pick similar hangers, but you can pick one or two when you visit the store. Avoid mixing thin-wired hangers and plastic hangers as they have a tendency of tangling in small spaces. If your closet has limited space, use wire hangers because you can fit more of them on the rack.

Step Two

Now that you have sorted your clothes into categories, you need to decide the order they will be placed in. Frequently used clothes should be placed in an easy-to-access location. If you are not able to decide the clothes you wear the most, you can place them in order of sizes; sweatshirts and long sleeved shirts should be in the far end corner while short-sleeved shirts and tank tops should be near the closet door. The pants should be hanged close to the door. For work clothes, hang them on one end. This is my suggestions, but you can have your arrangement formula as well.

Step Three

Take your tank tops to an open area and start sorting them by colors. By arranging them in different matching colors.The main colors are red, yellow, blue, green, pink, cream, purple, brown, white, grey, black, and orange. If you have clothes with any other color not listed here, just match them with their closest color. Once you have sorted them, place them in your closet at one end starting with the striking ones- that’s red, and ending with white.

Step Four

We are in the second category now; short sleeved shirts. It’s time to organize them by color. To make your closet pleasing to the eye, you can start by mix matching or start with the dull colors at the far end and finish off with brighter ones. However, do what works for your, but it can be confusing if you start with brighter colors from the end. Find a way to play around with colors.

Step Five

Whichever color pattern you have chosen, follow it with your long-sleeved shirts, sweatshirts, and pants. If your closet doesn’t look appealing, change it. It is easier to fix something you find unappealing now than doing it weeks later when your closet is full.

Step Six

Now that you have sorted all your clothes, Congratulations. Ensure that you have an area near the closet for placing things like empty hangers. This will keep your closet neat and easier to use. Organizing your closet by color will help you know the color you are missing, the color you have too much, and the one that may need a boost.

Step Seven

There are no set rules for mixing colors in your closet. Therefore, experiment and figure out what works best for you. Learn the method that will be easiest for you to maintain and one that looks better to you.
